Coming to the Voices Workshop
CONGRATULATIONS
YOU ARE A VONA WRITER!
This page is full of information about coming to Voices. Just a few facts
to make it a little easier to pack, prepare, and participate.
           The Atmosphere:

We are on the campus of University of San Francisco in the Haight-
Ashbury District. The style is casual and cool. And we mean cool in every sense of
the word. In the summer, the temperatures can drop into the 40's and the fog
can linger most of the morning. Bring your fleece, sweater, fuzzy slippers.
If you're staying on campus, you'll be in Phelan Hall, across from the
cafeteria. These are dorm rooms. Each participant will have a single. Bathrooms
are shared. Phelan Lounge is your room 24/7 and you can hang out, make tea,
play music, work on your writing, work on your canvas and make friends in the
    Lounge.
The Voices workshop has a serious focus, writers, like you, have set this
time aside for their work. It also has a social aspect. We are a community. Writers
often go out together to the Haight or to Clement Street or other parts of San
Francisco. At least one field trip to the beach is organized and walks through
    nearby Golden Gate Park.

           The Voices Workshop

Sunday night we all get together for Orientation. Even if you're a VONA
vet, coming to orientation is essential. Besides meeting the other participants, you
have your intro meeting with the workshop instructor. Materials are distributed,
along with name tags, contact sheets and classroom numbers.
                   Workshops run 9:30-12:30 each day. They always start on time;
sometimes they run late. Very often the participants get too involved to call it a day
right on time. Give your self a grace period for after class. Afternoons are
reserved for one-on-one meetings with your instructor except for Wednesdays
    and Fridays.
By now you may have received your guidelines, syllabus or class
directions. You may have had to upload your writing for the class. You receive your
classes' work and it's important that the work is read before you come to the
workshop. You'll be surprised at how little free time you'll have at the workshop.
Classes, writing, discussing, sharing, and making the collage will eat up your
    time.

           Special Events

We have plans for you...on Wednesdays, a Faculty Panel convenes to talk
about publishing and writers of color. Participants ask their most burning
    questions.
On Thursdays your faculty gives a public reading. It's free and open to all
and books and tee-shirts are for sale. It's a great time to see your teachers strut
    their stuff.
On Fridays class photographs are taken during the workshop hours. The
afternoon is filled with buzz of a satisfying week as the participants bring their
offerings to the potluck bbq. This is followed by the student reading. Each
participant gets a few minutes to present their work to the vona community. This
    takes place in Phelan Lounge

           The Lounge and the Collage

Each writer is assigned a canvas on which they create a collage. Any
materials can be used to express something about yourself. In our gallery we
have another way  of getting to know our writers and our faculty.
Anytime of day you can find a writer cutting, pasting, weaving and
scribbling. On Saturday, we strike the gallery and make our writing
    affirmations for the coming year.
The lounge is your space and will have a tea pot and tea, maybe some
food, music, blankets. Whatever it gathers over the course of the week.

          Who is Who

Voices folks are around to answer questions and direct you. Teri Elam
is the Workshop Director and she can let you know what's going on
when and where. Amanda Andonian is the Workshop Facilitator--she did the work
to get you to VONA, handling manuscripts, files and finances. Dalia Basiouny is
the program coordinator, she will be in residence in Phelan to help you out in the
    lounge and any participants' needs.
The directors are Diem Jones who is in residence Wednesday-Saturday
and Elmaz Abinader who teaches both weeks but will be happy to meet with
you for any serious concerns you have.
All contact information is distributed at Orientation.
