Masters Seminar: Screenwriting
True Story to Screen
taught by Gregory Allen Howard

participants come with true
story ideas they want to turn into
a screenplay--  personal,
coming of age, family drama,
biography; historical story...
and develop them into a screen
play
FICTION
week one: Thomas Glave
week two:  Mat Johnson
writers exchange up to 20 pages
of fiction, either short story or
excerpts from a longer piece.
Elements of the work are
discussed as well as the political
and social significance in the
world
POLITICAL CONTENT IN POETRY
STORY

Week One
All of our work has impact in politics,
literature and culture. How do we
write our political ideas and still
maintain the integrity of a story
a poem,or a memoir. How do we
have political content without
being topical...and become
transcendent...this class generates
work and reviews some pieces by
the writers.
NOVEL
week two: Chris Abani

Up to thirty pages of a novel are
examined in context of the larger
work. writers  exchange ideas and
discuss structure content and
craft.
MEMOIR
Week one--Faith Adiele
Week two--Elmaz Abinader

Writers share  strategies
for researching and producing
emotionally true memoirs.
Writers exchange  and evaluate
each others' works
POETRY
week one: Ruth Forman
week two: Suheir Hammad

Poets from several traditions
generate new writing, exchange
work, and look at poetry as a
literary and popular form.

RESIDENCY
WITH
DAVID MURA

The week is spent in conference
with a master instructor who
gives each writer individual
attention and conference. Daily
meetings are held to discuss craft
and writing practices.
